Our Mission & Values
People. Planet. Regeneration.
Restorative beauty—the current that gives rise to Mwani Zanzibar’s mission.
Restorative beauty runs deep, extending beyond skincare into personal, communal, and planetary well-being. It is nuanced and regenerative, honoring beauty in all its forms. Inspired by our namesake (mwani—Swahili for “seaweed”), we at Mwani Zanzibar cultivate, create, and share our macroalgae-based skincare to nourish both skin and livelihoods. At the same time, we work to strengthen economies and restore ecosystems. As a member of the Global Seaweed Coalition, we are committed to shaping a seaweed industry that ensures safe products, ethical working conditions, and environmental protection for coastal communities and their habitats.

Sustainable Procurement
Each ingredient used in Mwani Zanzibar products is sourced, harvested, and prepared with the greatest care and precision. Rich in powerful nutrients and plant-based antioxidants, we create our science-based formulas from luscious blends of indigenous African macroalgae, superfoods, and unrefined oils. A key to their potency is that many of our ingredients are wild harvested locally, enabling a short lead time between delivery and production.
As a certified member of ClimatePartner, we measure the carbon footprint of our products, define a roadmap to continuously reduce emissions, and offset the remaining emissions by supporting a certified carbon offset project. Where possible, we avoid transporting ingredients by use of engine, instead relying on wind-powered boats.

Packaging Design
We have extensively researched our packaging options and use what we believe to be the best available right now. Our bottles and fulfillment packaging are made from 100% post-consumer recycled waste— one of the first beauty companies in the world to do so—and our outer packaging is made from 80% post-consumer recycled waste.
We have worked closely with our glass supplier to thin our glass bottles, reducing manufacturing and transport carbon footprints. Our logo is debossed in the glass, eliminating the need for energy and materials for silk screen printing or plastic labelling. Our bottles are coloured with a non-toxic chalk pigment to avoid penetration of UVA and UVB rays, protecting the ingredients within.

Attention to Biodiversity
We work to reduce monoculture sources that present a threat to biodiversity, reducing tension between wildlife and communities by selecting ingredients that are native to the environment.
Our ingredients list indicates which ingredients were farmed using organic practices. In various instances the ingredients are wild, where it would be unthinkable to add fertilizer or pesticide. Such ingredients are the absolute kindest to our planet—more so than an organic certified ingredient that requires vast amounts of water and land to grow.
The honey in your Facial Cleanser & Mask and the beeswax in your Soap come from bees that pollinate local mangrove trees. By supporting apiarists and paying a premium for restorative practices, we help protect these vital ecosystems. This collaboration fights deforestation and climate change, creating a sustainable cycle that benefits both the island and the planet.

Building a Blue Economy
At Mwani Zanzibar, we know each of our farmers and ingredient suppliers by name, operating a holistic model, from seed to product, that ensures we oversee every step of the process. We work closely with 182 dedicated members, empowering them through technology and innovation. Our women are at the heart of this change, breaking barriers and shifting generational attitudes towards women’s participation in Zanzibar’s workforce.
As a certified member of ClimatePartner and a proud partner of The Seaweed Coalition, we measure the carbon footprint of our products and have created a roadmap to continuously reduce emissions and improve our practices. Our commitment to a regenerative blue economy is rooted in sustainable development principles, aligning with numerous UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17.
Mwani Zanzibar’s business model has attracted professionals from diverse fields, including founders of global brands, R&D experts, creatives, marketing specialists, biochemists, and formulation scientists. Their collective expertise has been crucial in bringing Mwani Zanzibar's innovative concept to life. With our established and future partnerships and collaboration, we are further enabled to achieve our efforts of building a regenerative blue economy within Zanzibar.
